Climate Upheaval: January 2024 Rewrites Kashmir's Thermal History with Unprecedented Highs
During January 2024, the Kashmir and certain Jammu regions witnessed remarkably elevated temperatures, establishing a record as the warmest January in history. The absence of snowfall and minimal Western Disturbances contributed to exceptionally high temperatures, surpassing normal levels by more than 8°C on certain days.
Srinagar experienced its highest-ever mean maximum temperature for January at 11.7°C, tying with the years 2001 and 1902. Additionally, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Qazigund, Kokernag, and Kupwara recorded their all-time highest temperatures. Gulmarg reached a mean maximum temperature of 5.4°C, Pahalgam 10.3°C, Qazigund 12.1°C, Kokernag 10.9°C, and Kupwara 11.6°C.
In the Jammu region, Banihal marked an unprecedented all-time highest mean maximum temperature of 16.4°C. Bhaderwah and Batote experienced their second-highest mean maximum temperatures on record, with Bhaderwah at 14.7°C and Batote at 14.8°C, closely matching its 2010 record, while the all-time highest mean maximum temperature for Batote was 18.4°C in 1995.
